Documentary 10 Years ARAMAIC RELIEF International

Moved by the plight of persecuted Christians in the Middle East, Severiyos took action in 2013. It all started with a small food distribution when he traveled during his work holidays to the Syrian border to help victims of the conflict. This led to the foundation of the Swiss NGO ARAMAIC RELIEF International, dedicated to providing immediate humanitarian assistance to the forgotten and voiceless war victims in conflict zones.
For the past decade, ARAMAIC RELIEF International, positively impacted over 500,000 lives through 467 humanitarian projects in 6 countries.

Over 180,000 victims of war in Syria and Iraq helped

The ARAMAIC RELIEF International “celebrated” its fifth anniversary at the Burgbachsaal in the city last Saturday evening when a moving documentary film showed those attending how desperate the situation was for victims of war in Aleppo in Syria.

The film showed Severiyos Aydin, the founder of ARI, amid the rubble of destroyed buildings, unable to find the right words to describe the dreadful scenes around him.

The 32-year-old, who lives in Baar, comes from a Christian Aramaic family with its roots in southeast Turkey. When conflict started in Syria in 2011, what perturbed him was that hardly anyone seemed to be doing anything to help persecuted minority groups. “I wanted to help,” he said, while admitting he had no experience in this area. “We aim to help where need is most urgent,” he continued, adding how he wanted administration of it all to be as simple as possible with everything transparent. “Those who donate can easily see how their money has been spent.”

Over the past five years, Aydin and his team have built up a large network, concentrating on providing help in situ. “When I go out there,” he explained to the hundred or so people attending the event, “I do not stay in hotels but with local people, hence I can get a better idea of all they are going through,” he said. Not that all this is easy for him to take in, “but helping helps”.

It is only right that Aydin is proud and thankful of the fact that some180,000 people in Syria and northern Iraq have been helped through his organisation, a similar version of which is also active in South Sudan. Two highlights in his campaign over the past five years have been his having had the opportunity to speak before the European Parliament and visit the Swiss Guard in Rome. Much use is made of social media, too, to publicise all what is being done and inform the public about what is planned for the future.

At present, those in need are being provided with basic foodstuffs and warm blankets. Furthermore, flats are being renovated and help for traumatised children sought. One sad point he had to mention was that life expectancy in these regions was falling, especially in the case of children, many of whom die from what elsewhere would be regarded as harmless illnesses; hence some funding goes to providing medication or paying for operations.

Not that the film showed solely scenes of desperation, scenes of happy and dancing children were shown, too, with others enjoying sweets distributed among them. “Despite all they are going through, it is good to see that the local people have not lost their sense of joy,” he concluded. All of which spurs him and his team to do yet more to help.

VIDEO distribution of 17.5 tons of food Uganda

DSC 4828

At the beginning of March 2017, we traveled to Uganda as part of an emergency aid operation and from there on to Sudan, where there is an acute famine. In Uganda, there are more than half a million South Sudanese refugees, and every day more cross the border with the already poor and drought-stricken country. We visited these regions and carried out a total of 4 food distributions in cooperation with World Action Fund. A total of 17.5 tonnes of flour and beans were distributed to approximately 1200 families.
The aim of our mission in South Sudan was to carry out a situation assessment and to form new cooperations for rapid, efficient and long-term assistance to the internally displaced and the hungry. With your help, we can soon realize more life-saving food distributions. Thank you very much for your valuable support! (Donations below)

Donation Campaign – Hunger Relief in Southern Sudan

DSC 5101

Hunger, war, expulsion continue to shape many regions. Especially the young state of South Sudan is an example of the problems of Africa. And relief agencies warn that a humanitarian disaster has already occurred for millions of people.
In South Sudan a devastating famine has broken out. In the civil war country of South Sudan, according to UN figures, about 100,000 people are directly threatened by starvation, and around five million people need food aid. Hundreds of thousands have fled abroad since a new outbreak of the fighting last July. Around two million people have sought shelter in other parts of the country.
The organization fears a further spread of the hunger crisis. About half of South Sudanese – about 5.5 million people – are already suffering from food insecurity and are therefore hovering in the coming months in their lives, the report says. In addition, about three-quarters of all households in the East African country had only deficient food.
The United Nations speaks of a famine only when people have already died of malnutrition.

In cooperation with our local partner organization we want to distribute urgently needed food in a first step. These will be procured in Uganda and transported from there to the affected regions in southern Sudan, where our local partners then carry out the various distributions. To this end, we are launching a new fundraising campaign in favor of the starving people in southern Sudan.

The church community of Meskeneh takes over the management and administration of the school. It is our first construction project of this form in Syria. We are very happy about this important educational project which we can only realize with your energetic support!

Visit of the liberated Christian villages in the Nineveh plain

With a delegation of politicians, jury members and clerics, we visited the liberated Christian villages of the Nineveh plain on October 30, Bartella, Karamles and Qaraqosh, the largest Christian city in Iraq. There, under the leadership of the Syrian Catholic bishop, we held the first mass since the conquest of the city more than two years ago. It was a historic moment and an important step for the Christians in Iraq! ARAMAIC RELIEF International has been supporting the displaced inhabitants of this region with humanitarian aid projects for 2.5 years. We are continuing these important projects with all our strength and will support the families in the reconstruction effortfully! Help us restore these people to their homes.
